Fueling A Sustainable Future

We believe that creating a better world for generations to come starts today.

Our Collective Responsibility

At Hornet Hospitality, we’re committed to making a positive impact on campus and the community by focusing on responsible sourcing, reducing food waste, and offering nutritious meals made with responsible practices. From supporting local partners to making thoughtful choices in our dining operations, we’re working every day to build a more sustainable future. And you can be a part of the effort, too!

Working Toward Zero Waste

We proudly support Sacramento State's sustainability goals. Here are a few active initiatives.

  • Robust Recycling

We recycle cardboard, metal, paper, glass, and accepted plastic products, and we recycle uncommon items—such as batteries and printer cartridges—wherever possible.

  • Collaborative Composting

We work with Sac State Sustainability to collect organic materials—including food waste and compostable service items such as napkins and wooden stir sticks—to be composted into useable, nutrient-rich soil amendments.

  • Proactive Prevention

We use tracking and forecasting tools to proactively identify food waste trends in order to alter our preparation accordingly.

Campus Executive Chef Blake adds post-consumer food waste from the Dining Commons to the on-campus composter, transforming food scraps into eco-friendly compost that nourishes campus plants and lawns.

Showcasing Our Local Partner Relationships

Hornet Hospitality sources food from many local farmers, growers, and distributors. Our partners change throughout the year depending on seasonality and availability.

More Ways to Go Green with Hornet Hospitality

  • Choose to Reuse

With sustainable circularity in mind, we redesigned our residential dining program to reduce the use of single-use plastics and other disposable products. Our reusable clamshell boxes and cups help us do just that! With thousands of residents who may wish to take their meals to-go during any meal period, we have saved countless disposables from the landfill!

  • Get Involved

We host several key events throughout the year to inform the Sac State community about sustainable dining practices, including Earth Day Celebration, Golden Ticket Dinner, Coolfood Meal Promotions, and Meatless Mondays.

  • Food Donation

Through our Epicure Extras program, we notify students of free surplus food from catered events via the Sac State Mobile App, reducing food waste while providing real-time nourishment. In addition, we donate non-perishable items each semester to the ASI Food Pantry.
